Conflict Mitigation Strategies

I studied the efficacy of several mitigation strategies to reduce crop damage by rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in northern India. In particular, I tested conditioned taste aversion (CTA), various types of fencing, auditory and olfactory deterrents, and ultrasonic devices.

Primate Geophagic Behavior

I used video camera traps and soil analyses to investigate geophagic behavior in chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) inhabiting the Western Cape of South Africa. Because these monkeys show external markers of pregnancy, I could document consumption by age class, sex, and reproductive status. I analyzed selected consumed soils from geophagy sites for geochemical properties and the presence of soil-transmitted helminths. I am continuing to investigate these soils and their putative benefits to health.

Primate Spatial Ecology in a Human-Modified Environment

A myriad of biotic and abiotic factors influence health and home range.  Using GPS collar data and GIS, I am evaluating home range, ranging behavior, habitat utilization, and the possible influence of alien eradication. Understanding animals’ spatial needs are critical to health, conservation, and management.
